Egypt Partakes in ITU-T WP 2/5 Meeting

    Date published: 4 March 2018
Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), will participate in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Working Party 2 of Study Group 5 (ITU-T WP2/5) meeting that will be held on March 5-9, at ITU headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland.

ITU-T (SG5) is responsible for studies on methodologies for evaluating ICT effects on climate change and publishing guidelines for using ICTs in an eco-friendly way. Under its environmental mandate, SG5 is also responsible for studying design methodologies to reduce ICTs and e-waste's adverse environmental effects; for example, through recycling of ICT facilities and equipment.

SG5 consists of two working parties, one of them is the Working Party 2 (SG5 WP2) on "ICT and climate change" that works on a number of questions. Each question has a rapporteur, rapporteur assistant and a group of members from various countries and organizations. The question is designed to achieve a range of outcomes represented in recommendations, measurements, indicators and guidelines, adding to ITU outcomes and contributions.

Given its remarkable efforts in the SG5 since its establishment in 2010, Egypt occupies the position of Vice Chair of SG5 for the study group period 2016- 2020 and the Rapporteur of Question 7 on Circular economy including e-waste, and Assistant Rapporteur of Question 9 on Climate change and assessment of information and communication technology (ICT) in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Egypt’s working team prepared four technical contributions in the field of green ICT, to be submitted at the meeting and be integrated with the other topics that will be discussed.

Egypt is one of the oldest members in the ITU and has 16 sector members from the private sector in the union. It is also a founding member of the “Partners to Connect the World” initiative and it chairs the ITU Council Working Group on International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs). Egypt is an active participant in the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) activities and it has succeeded in establishing the first regional subgroup in SG2. This, in turn, further enhances the regional presence of ITU and increases its involvement with developing countries in Africa and the Arab World.

Based in Geneva, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies with 191-member states and more than 700 sector members and associates. ITU role is to enable the global growth and sustained development of ICT. In addition, ITU organizes international telecom events like WSIS and Telecom Africa.
