Egypt Wins the first Place at the UN Public Service Awards Program

    Date published: 8 June 2011
On June 23rd, and during the United Nations Public Service Day, Egypt will be awarded the 1st place for its initiative “Women Health Outreach Program” in "Public Service Awards" Program, of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

The initiative is a government-funded program, which is a partnership between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Health, aiming at expanding healthcare provision to women nationwide by using information and communication technologies.

This year, 36 public organizations are awarded with the most prestigious recognition of excellence in public service, during the United Nations Public Service Day.

The program has five categories for which nominations of public institutions are submitted every year. The winners, this year, are from various countries such as Brazil, Canada, India, Korea, South Africa, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt.

The idea of this initiative emerged from the fact that health care services in Egypt’s rural areas are not sufficient to cover all people needs in these areas. In addition, the majority of rural people cannot afford the costs of proper treatments.

The National Cancer Institute in Cairo has reported breast cancer to represent 35.1% of female cancers in Egypt with over 80% of such cancers at stages III and IV, highly developed cancer stages.

A large number of these cases could have been detected earlier only if there were good level of health care services and notably free screening services and therapeutic procedures.

In this context, the “Women Health Outreach Program” (WHOP), came to provide screening and therapeutic services for all Egyptian women over the age of 45 within their local communities.
