    Launching the MCIT Initiative: ICTs for People with Disabilities

    Out of its eager to achieve Human development in all age categories disregarding their circumstances, especially people with disabilities consisting 10% of the whole population in Egypt, Minister of Communications and Information Technology launches an initiative to empower people with disabilities, named ICTs for People with Disabilities.

    The launching of the PWD initiative takes place on Thursday 9th of February 2012, at Smart Village Conference Center, under the auspices of the Prime Minister and to which a number of ministers are invited.  Minister of ICT, Dr. Mohamed Salem shall inaugurate the conference of “ICTs for People with Disabilities”, in the presence of Dr. Ali Gomaa, Egypt’s Grand Mofti.
     
    MCIT shall implement this initiative in cooperation with Wayana International foundation For Integration & Awareness and Misr El-Kheir (MEK) foundation.

    Amongst prominent figures attending the opening ceremony of the conference come the minister of education, Dr. Gamal El-Araby, and the minister of health and housing, Dr. Fouad Al- Nawawy, as well as a group of representatives from other ministries such as the ministry of administrative development and the ministry of social affairs.

    Moreover, civil society representatives like the Red Crescent society and government officials from the parliament and MCIT leaders are also to be present at the conference.

    This initiative comes in the framework of the Egyptian government keenness to integrate this category of Egyptian citizens into the society through becoming active members in the national economy and this too is by participating in the national GDP.

    This initiative aims to provide training for persons with disabilities on basic and advanced computer skills, uplift the percentage of their employees in the ICT sector, and provide training grants in specialized training programs.

    More goals are set through this initiative, such as providing training grants for visually impaired people, encouraging the use of visual communication tools and benefiting from technology homes to guarantee the spread of technology nationwide. Civil society institutions, ICT companies and governmental bodies are the main partners of MCIT in this initiative.
