    ICT Industry Development Agreements Signed in China

    During his visit to Hong Kong, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese Minister of Information Industry and two other agreements with the Chinese companies ZTA and Huawei on the Wi-Max research and development field.

    Minister Kamel also conducted a number of meetings with senior officials and executives in the Chinese ICT industry. Kamel met with his counterparts of Mauritius and China in addition to first deputy of Ericsson, the CEO of Nortel where he conferred with them means of bilateral cooperation.

    Kamel also agreed with Patricia Ross, the new CEO of Alcatel and Lucent on expanding the Wi-Fi penetration in Egyptian schools and increasing the company''s investments in the technical support centers that export their services abroad as well as making use of the Egyptian calibers in these centers.

    Besides, Kamel held a meeting with Commissioner Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media of the European Commission during which they they discussed aspects related to the conference of Euro-Mediterranean ICT ministers that Egypt hosts.

    Dr Kamel headed for Hong Kong on December 2nd accompanied by a high level delegation on an official mission to participate in ITU Telecom World 2006  held from December 4th to 8th, 2006.

    The Egyptian participation in the international event came about within Egypt''s contribution to the global dialogue on the information society as well as promoting for ICT investment opportunities in Egypt.

    Minister Kamel took part in the official inauguration, which was featured by the presence of the chairmen of reputable multinationals, businessmen and governments'' representatives.

    Kamel was also a major speaker in the Youth Forum inauguration, held on the periphery of the ITU Telecom World 2006. Two young representatives from Egypt and 220 from different countries around the world were the forum participants. Kamel''''''''''''''''s speech focused on the importance of technology in world peace and communication among nationals, the assimilation of culture as well as opening new employment channels for youth.

    Egypt took part in the official exhibition with a 195-squar meter pavilion in hall number 8, beside the pavilions of Hong Kong, China and New Zealand. 
    On the other hand, Bibliotheca Alexandria''''''''''''''''s Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) presented the Egyptian heritage via nine screens.

    The ITU Telecom World 2006 is part of a series of exhibitions and conferences that International Telecommunications Union (ITU) holds periodically in numerous continents. This year, about 600 exhibitions from 40 countries took part in the exhibition, whereas more than 150,000 visitors belonging to different countries visited it.
