Egypt Partakes in COMESA 11TH Joint Meeting of Committees on Transport, Communications, Information Technology, Energy

    Date published: 17 June 2019

Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), will participate in the 11th Joint Meeting of Committees on Transport, Communications, Information Technology, and Energy, of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), on June 17-21, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The technical meetings will take place on June 17-19, followed by the ministerial meetings on June 20-21, in which representatives of the concerned ministries will participate. The ministerial meetings will discuss and adopt or otherwise, the recommendations of the technical experts and make decisions that will be binding to all Member States and the COMESA Secretariat to implement.

Egypt, through participating in these meetings, aims to discuss with COMESA Secretariat officials the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) proposed in 2018, to enhance cooperation between the two sides. This is in addition to Egyptís hosting of the Secretariat of the Association of Regulators of Information and Communications Service of Eastern and Southern Africa (ARICEA), and COMESA Cybersecurity Center, as well as Egyptís willingness to cooperate in the fields of information security and cybercrime.

Moreover, Egypt will discuss how to benefit from COMESA mechanisms to support its various infrastructure initiatives, as well as to enhance cooperation with Member States in a number of fields, including developing technological innovation through the African App Launchpad (AAL) initiative, and the United Nations Technology Innovation Lab (UNTIL), established in Smart Village.

This is in addition to discussing digital transformation, through presenting Egyptís experience in e-government applications, and transferring this experience to African countries, thus contributing to promoting economic growth by creating more job vacancies and fostering innovation.

During the meetings, Egypt will also present a proposal to establish a separate committee for communication and information technology, for the important role that ICTs can play in driving development in Africa. The proposal suggests holding the proposed committee meeting with the annual meeting of communications regulators of COMESA Member States.
