    ITU, TIEC Organize Regional Workshop on Bridging Digital Innovation Divide

    The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in collaboration with the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC), organized the Regional Workshop on “Bridging the Digital Innovation Divide: Fostering Digital Entrepreneurship and Startup Ecosystems”, on October 1-2, at TIEC premises in Smart Village.

    During the workshop, the Egyptian experience in digital innovation and entrepreneurship, was discussed, based on the best practices that stimulate the growth of the innovation ecosystem through developing skills, providing mentorship, incubation and access to markets.

    This is in addition to the efforts of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), through its affiliates, in adopting a number of policies and strategies that help promote entrepreneurship and self-employment, and develop creative thinking skills.

    This includes innovation clusters, establishing technology parks and technological innovation hubs nationwide, as well as the national initiatives that target developing digital skills to empower Egypt to become a regional hub for digital innovation.

    The overall objective of the workshop is to enhance regional digital integration through identifying the digital divide of innovation and evaluating the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem in Arab countries, objectively, through looking into real-world case studies and models.

    It also aimed to raise awareness of the importance of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship among youth, and encouraging them to carry out projects and renewed economic activities to help create high value-added jobs.

    In addition, the workshop highlighted that the continuous and effective communication between the ITU and the Egyptian government represents a model of effective partnership and fruitful and constructive cooperation to consolidate views on boosting entrepreneurship and supporting startups in digital innovations.

    Moreover, the workshop explored the means of improving policies, and the challenges facing countries and institutions in establishing ICT innovation ecosystems, through discussions, sharing expertise and knowledge, and harnessing different experiments and initiatives. 

    The workshop also discussed the digital innovation framework and approach of the ITU, as well as the challenges and opportunities that Arab youth and women face in innovation and entrepreneurship, from the perspective of some regional and international entities, such as the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Arab Technology Incubators and Technoparks Network (ARTECNET), the United Nations Technology Innovation Lab (UNTIL) in Egypt, and other civil society organizations.
