Egypt Partakes in WTO Public Forum 2019

    Date published: 7 October 2019

Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), will participate in the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum 2019, on October 8-11, in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme “Trading Forward: Adapting to a Changing World”.

The Forum is the WTO largest annual outreach event. It provides a unique platform for heads of states, civil society, leading global business people, students, academics and non-governmental organizations to come together and debate on a wide range of WTO issues and on some of the major trade and development topics of the day. Over 1,500 participants attend the Forum each year.

This year's Forum will discuss how trade can adapt to the changes influencing the trading system, focusing on the services sector, local rules and their impact on international commitments, as well as digital economy, e-commerce and regional agreements.

Egypt’s participation in the Forum is to follow up on the latest WTO discussions and updates on the services sector and its impact on the table of commitments of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), including the Egyptian commitments to liberalize telecommunications services 2002, computer and relevant services, and express mail services 2005.

This is in addition to exploring the latest updates on a number of new agreements, such as the e-commerce agreement, the local rules that enable countries to set regulations without affecting the table of commitments provided within the framework of WTO agreements, the system for settling disputes of different views between WTO member states, digital economy, regional agreements and their role in liberalizing trade.
