MCIT Holds Sustainable Recycling Industries Project Launching Event

    Date published: 24 July 2016

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) will organize a ceremony and a press conference for launching the Sustainable Recycling Industries project, on July 26 at MCIT headquarters in Smart Village. The event is held in cooperation with the Switzerland government, represented by Switzerland embassy in Egypt, and the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE), during the visit of Swiss and international experts of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA), responsible for supervising the project’s implementation.

The conference aims to shed light on the project’s objectives and contributions in encouraging small and medium industries and creating new job opportunities. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the Embassy of Switzerland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 10 to cooperate in supporting e-waste recycling industries in Egypt. The MoU is designed to foster the sustainable management of e-waste, support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and encourage involvement in the industries of recycling and extracting secondary materials in environmentally and economically sustainable ways.

This is in addition to maximizing the use of precious metals in e-waste and ensure their recycling in a manner that is safe for human health and the environment. During the two-year MoU ending 31 December 2017, the Swiss Government is committed to providing a financial contribution to support the implementation of these projects. The MoU also contributes to achieving the objectives of the “Green ICT” program that has been adopted by MCIT and the Ministry of Environment (MOE) since 2010.
