    Date published: 2 March 2020

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Arab Regional Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), organized the Regional Workshop on Smart Water Management, on March 1, in Cairo.

The workshop showcased the outcomes of the Smart Groundwater Management Project in Egypt, and addressed some of the key challenges facing water management, particularly in agriculture. In addition, proposals were made to upscale efforts on utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in water management in the Arab region.

The Central Department for Community Development at MCIT participated in the workshop. In addition, the ICT for Comprehensive Community Development (ICT4CCD) project of the Central Department for Community Development chaired the “Innovations in utilizing emerging technologies for water, irrigation and agriculture” session.

The session discussed the project partners’ roles; the Ministry of Irrigation, in collaboration with the ICT4CCD project information center, established a technological connection and compiled the data of the groundwater wells, throughout the year. They developed a website and an application to follow up on the data from Saryaqos well in Qalyubia, live. NTRA, using the data compiled from Saryaqos well in 2019, introduced AI to the project through developing a model for forecasting consumption patterns and groundwater levels.

In addition, a knowledge portal was created, comprising experts and involved entities, on Kenanaonline community development portal. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of water resources management.

Participants in the workshop highlighted the need to continue efforts to carry out similar projects that use technological solutions and AI to overcome the challenges, preserve the future of water in Egypt and enhance the management of water resources in an optimal way.
