    The first of its kind: Gulf Conference tackling Arab Family Online Protection

    The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain, in collaboration with the Family Online Safety Institute are hosting "Gulf Conference: Creating a National Consensus for Online Safety", in the period from 26th -28th  April, 2010, in Manama, Bahrain.

    This event, which is held under the auspices of H.E. Minister of Cabinet Affairs, the minster responsible for telecommunications sector, Sheikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa, is considered to be the first of its kind in the gulf region, in pursuit of a national consensus for online safety and in support of ICT strategy to empower the e-content in the Arab world.

    The conference is mediated by the Family Online Safety Institute, which works to make the online world safer for children and their families by identifying and promoting best practices, tools and methods in the field of online safety, and also respecting free expression.

    Central to the conference agenda is family protection, stemming from a growing concern about the importance of ensuring the safety of young people and families on the Internet. 

    This conference will gather specialists from the region but also from around the world to engage all stakeholders in this challenge, to prepare the Arab countries for 21st century citizenship.

    Ms. Nevin Tewfik, Director of the Internet Safety Project, and who is also member of the Information Infrastructure Division of the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in charge of ICT4D projects, policies and strategies will participate in this conference.

    According to the Bahraini TRA, the conference will be open to all Internet Service Providers, Telecommunications companies, children’s charities; educational establishments; and NGOs (from all the Arab countries) and the public. As the Bahraini TRA has already received confirmation from some of the World’s leading experts.

    About The Internet Safety Project
    First of its kind in the region, the Internet Safety Project was launched in 2007 at the International Youth Forum in Sharm el Sheik. The project utilizes ICTs and internet-based tools with the chief aim of spreading a culture of peace, tolerance and dialogue among youth through facilitating intercultural communication and understanding, empathy creation, skill development and internet safety awareness and knowledge among young people and other stakeholders.
