NU Signs an Agreement with GM

    Date published: 2 May 2010
Nile University (NU), Egypt and General Motors Holdings LLC (GM), USA signed a Master Agreement recently that establishes a strong relationship in cutting-edge scientific research.

Under the agreement GM will provide funding for NU’s faculty and research assistants to perform research of special interest to GM and the scientific community at large.

The agreement also brings together researchers from both organizations, another milestone in GM’s long history of supporting intellectual diversity and good citizenship.

On NU’s part the agreement is one more step in NU’s participation with the global technical community in the development of new knowledge and valuable intellectual property.

Also launched today was the first of the research projects under the agreement. The project under the title of “Reliable and Secure Vehicular Networks” will be conducted by Professor Hesham El-Gamal NU Research Fellow, and Drs. Amr El-Kei, Tamer El-Batt, and Moustafa Youssef, Assistant professors at NU.

NU’s research faculty will be assisted by some dozen research assistants from NU’s Wireless Intelligent Networks Center (WINC) who will closely work with their GM counterparts in the Electrical and Controls Integration Research Laboratory at GM’s Global R&D Center.

The project launched under the acronym “VANETS”- for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks – is aimed at developing a novel framework for reliable and secure vehicle-to-vehicle wireless networks that enable next generation transportation services and applications.

More specifically, NU researchers will focus on developing and validating protocols for “trust management and privacy” of vehicle wireless networks. Applications in the transportation arena are broad and span the spectrum from in-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle information dissemination and entertainment to vehicle and passenger safety... safety being a priority value for GM’s products and services.
