ITIDA Holds a Workshop at the Supreme Council of Universities on SSME

    Date published: 16 July 2009
A workshop on adding educational courses about Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) to the curricula of Egyptian universities was organized on 13 July, 2009 cooperatively with Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and IBM Corp.

The workshop was held at the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU). A group of professors at several Egyptian universities and representatives of ITIDA and IBM attended the workshop.

The workshop tackled the required steps and the level of readiness before adding new academic courses to universities' curricula. Such educational material is likely to enable students of different specialties to excel in fields related to SSME, enhance their creativity and innovation and enrich the fields of scientific research.

Discussions explained the necessity of reviewing this issue thoroughly before taking any decisions about adding new subjects to educational courses in order to guarantee the best and most suitable ways of applying this concept.

Participants discussed recommendations and means of supporting SSME educational programs, developing models of SSME in higher education, applying the experience to different educational stages and utilizing new teaching methodologies.

More than 250 universities in about 50 countries introduced SSME through specific programs and scientific degrees.

ITIDA CEO Dr. Hazem Abdelazim noted that including such subjects in academic studies goes in line with the general outlines of the national strategy for boosting the IT industry via linking educational curricula to the employment market demands.

Dr. Abdelazim added that the new fields of study designed to develop the skills of Egyptian calibers conform to the requirements of the world's service-based economy.

On his part, Professor Kris Singh, President of Service Research and Innovation Institute (SRII) of IBM, clarified his view to the attendees through presenting some suggestions about how the new academic fields can be applied to service systems.

Professor Singh called on the participating Egyptian professors to make use of the content on the institute website www.thesrii.org and know about the successful experiences in this domain.

The workshop is a continuation of the efforts toward enhancing the graduates' skills through programs and initiatives like EduEgypt.

EduEgypt aims at building the skills of university graduates to meet the needs of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry.

It encompasses developing interpersonal skills like customer service, effective listening, crisis management, presentation skills, time management, handling data, software programming, data entry, analytical thinking and problem solving. The program also includes professional IT tracks like SAP, ERP and Oracle.

A recent study by McKenzie Institute has concluded that the leaderships of international companies are interested in two major subjects. The first issue has to do with finding and keeping well-trained manpower as being one of the most important success factors.

The second concept is related to competition among companies over human talents, which is likely to take an international form that will have a great impact during the next five years.
