    Transform Africa Summit 2018

    Last updated: 30 May 2018

Transform Africa Summit 2018 was held on May 8-10, under the theme "Accelerating Africa’s Single Digital Market”. The Summit was inaugurated by the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, in the presence of the representatives of the participating countries and the CEO of the Summit’s initiative Hamdoun Touria, discussing the key pillars for creating a single digital market for Africa.

The Minister of Communication and Information Technology Yasser ElKady, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi— leading a high-level delegation—participated in the Summit.
During his participation at Transform Africa Summit 2018, the ICT Minister has reviewed Egypt's vision for creating a single digital market for Africa through adopting a number of policies related to developing and securing telecommunications infrastructure, providing trained human calibers, developing legal frameworks and creating a conducive environment for investment.

In a related context, ElKady participated in the sixth meeting of the Board of Directors of Smart Africa Initiative, headed by President of Rwanda Paul Kagame. The Board of Directors consists of the presidents of the Initiative’s Member States and their representatives. It meets annually to review the plan of the previous year and agree on projects and future steps needed to achieve the objectives of the Initiative.

The meeting tackled a number of issues related to promoting cooperation among African countries in the field of telecommunications infrastructure and plans to expand the deployment of smart cities in Africa by highlighting the experience of Egypt, Rwanda and Senegal. This is in addition to exploring means to invest in ICT areas in Africa during the China-Africa Summit and EU-Africa Summit, and discussing the most important initiatives aimed at maximizing the resources of the African continent.

The first Transform Africa Summit was held in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, in October 2013, under the auspices and in the presence of the Rwandan President, with the participation of seven other African Presidents of: Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Kenya, Southern Sudan, Uganda and Gabon. During that Summit, Smart Africa initiative was launched, aiming at using ICT tools to promote the economic and social development of the African continent and to meet the challenges of sustainable development in the African countries.

Egypt joined Smart Africa initiative in November 2016. This accession was announced during the African symposium, held at Cairo ICT 2016. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has adopted a project that aimed at promoting innovation and entrepreneurship among African young people, adopting their successful innovations and helping them to market these innovations. This is in addition to providing job opportunities for African young people by training them in the fields of outsourcing.
