    U.S. Secretary of Education Observes Egypt’s Education Initiative at Smart Village

    Cairo, 25 May 2006

    A Round table discussion was held today at Smart Village in the presence of U.S. Secretary of Education Mrs. Margaret Spellings and Egyptian Ministers of Communications and Information Technology, Minister of Education, and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

    Dr. Hoda Baraka, First Deputy to Minister of Communications and Information Technology presented the Egyptian Education Initiative which aims at the development of education in Egypt through the utilization of state-of-the-art ICTs. The initiative will focus on four tracks: pre-university education, higher education, lifelong learning and e-learning industry development. The initiative’s strategic objective is the improvement of the quality of delivering learning processes in Egypt through partnership with the society and the usage of ICT tools.

    Ambassador of the United States of America to Cairo participated in the roundtable along with key figures from the Ministries of Communications and Information Technology, Education, and Higher Education and Scientific Research. In addition, representatives of the local and multinational companies working in the ICT field – committed and participating in the Initiative - and civil society institutes interested in the field pf e-learning were among the participants of that key event.

    Mrs. Margaret Spellings also toured the Smart Village, visiting the Center for Documentation of Cultural & Natural Heritage (CULTNAT), where she witnessed a presentation on culture documentation using state-of-the art communication and information technologies.

    Mrs. Spellings has lead several educational initiatives that support the education process in the United States of America, namely the American Competitiveness Initiative, National Security Language Initiative, Formation of Commission on The Future of Higher Education, Rural Education Initiative: Formation of the Center for Rural Education Established at Education Department, Student Eligibility Options for New Academic Grants.
