    The Inauguration of Egypt’s First School Connected to the Wireless Internet in Alexandria

    Alexandria, 2 September 2006

    Within the framework of the Egyptian Education Initiative (EEI) that is endorsed by Egypt’s First Lady, Ms Suzanne Mubarak, and executed by the Ministry of Education in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the first wireless interest school was inaugurated in Alexandria.

    Attended the inauguration Minister of CIT, Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Education, Dr. Youssry El Gamal and Alexandria Governor, Adel Labib.

    On the visit as well was Dr. Hoda Baraka, director of the initiative and Deputy for the CIT minister and Engineer Aqil Beshir, Telecom Egypt chairman and Dr. Salah Eleiwa, director of technological development at the Ministry of Education.

    Khadiga Bint Khwaylid middle school for girls, Al-Max, Alexandria, is the first to be equipped with high-speed wireless Internet in Egypt and is one of the schools participating in the EEI which aims at building students’ and teachers’ comprehensive skills utilizing state-of-the-art Information Technology.

    The initiative also aims to bridge the digital divide and mobilize the society’s resources to achieve the national educational goal.

    The initiative covers 2000 public middle schools in 27 governorates throughout the country, each with 31 computers allowing students to learn basic computer skills and adding to their sources of knowledge by connecting the schools with hi-speed internet.

    Lucent technologies and Telecom Egypt laid down the digital wireless Internet using EVDO 1X CDMA2000 technology in an attempt to connect schools with something other than ground connections and to serve schools in all remote areas throughout the country.

    This visit comes as a follows up on the executive phase of the initiative’s work plan that was launched during the World Economic Forum held in May 2006 in Sharm El Sheikh with the objective of improving the quality of the education process Public Private Partnerships and CIT tools in cooperation with the initiative partners including ministers, donors, Egyptian and international private sector companies operating in the field of CIT.
