    Egyptian Geography Network Wins SAG Award for 2006

    The Egyptian Geography Network (EGN) has been awarded Special Achievement in Geographic Information Systems -SAG 2006 Award during ESRI International User Conference 2006 this August in the USA.

    EGN is one of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects launched by Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It is a local network for users and serves geographic information providers who utilize the internet infrastructure in offering geographic content to information systems. The network has many targets.

    EGN aims to save the Stateís high-costs and efforts exerted in repeatedly planning and digitalizing maps. Setting a mechanism that simplifies information exchange among governmental organizations and other entities is another target that EGN works on achieving. These are in addition to: unifying measurements used in mapping and publishing digital maps on the national level and facilitating geographic data to citizens, decision-makers and investors, which boosts investments in Egypt.

    Also the network will be used as a nucleus for establishing the national geographic database and Creating a competitive market gathering sectors working on geographic information. Moreover, the EGN will open new employment horizons for the Egyptian youth.

    The EGN is a cooperative system allowing the multiplicity of contributors and facilitating the framework of publishing or exchanging geographic information or utilizing it online. The network also facilitates for GIS organizations to publish their own data via map and metadata services. It also allows data searches available at other organizations.

    It is worth mentioning that EGN is available to private, public, and commercial users, data publishers, and service providers. It can also be used via the internet by entities and organizations in addition to those which require authorized information access.

    On the other hand, the network represents an effective tool for foreign investment in Egypt as it markets the resources and elements of investment in GIS in Egypt via the Internet. It also promotes easy access and data sharing nationwide. ENG services are available on www.egn.gov.eg.
