Inauguration of Phase I of the Chambers of Commerce Information Network Project

    Cairo , 28 September 2006

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel and Minister of Industry and Trade Eng. Rashid Mohamed Rashid inaugurated today the first phase for the Chmabers of Commerce Information Network project in Giza. The two ministers were accompanied by Giza governorate Secretary General Sayed Marie - on behalf of the governor - and Mr. Mohamed Al Masry, chairman of the general federation of commerce chambers. This project goes in line with the Egyptian Information Society Initiative (EISI) implemented by MCIT in cooperation with all concerned ministries and State authorities.

The project aims to boost the trade sector and enhance the competitive edge of Egyptian trade companies as well as to empower e-commerce and develop the efficiency of public trade management through investment development. This can be achieved by facilitating accurate and sufficient data within the spectrum of the commerce chambers operations to support decision makers via an integrated information system.

It is worth mentioning that MCIT will be in charge of implementing the information network connecting the commerce chambers nationwide with the general federation and the information center at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. MCITís role also encompasses equipping the different project centers with devices and communications and information transmission networks. Also the applications of the operations of both the chambersí operations and the general federation have already been implemented.

The project phases were concurrent to training on the technicalities of dealing with network and information systems offered to the executives in all departments of the commerce chambers, the general federation and the information center at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Such training aims to develop the skills of these employees to guarantee the efficiency of the network operations and its maintenance as well as the capability of upgrading the system to cope with the consistent IT development.

This project goes in line with the economic development Egypt has been witnessing recently, which pushes forward the trade community in Egypt. The new information network also supports planning and decision making - on all levels - through facilitating information on the different economic activities. It is a means towards automating trade activities and boosting cooperation between commerce chambers and the entities that deal with them.
