    Nazif Inaugurates the Universities and Research Centers Network, the Second Internet Generation and the First Science and Technology Portal

    Cairo , 22 January 2007

    Premier Dr. Ahmed Nazif, along with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel and that of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Hani Helal, inaugurated today the upgrade operations of the unified high-speed information network linking Egyptian universities, research centers and Bibliotheca Alexandria.

    The upgrade operations encompassed updating the technological environment of 17 Egyptian universities through establishing 315 IT clubs inside the different colleges.

    The two ministries funded and implemented the upgrade of internal networks in 17 universities as well as upgrading the infrastructure of the main center of the Egyptian Universities Network. This involves video conferencing and streaming facilities. 

    The network is the outcome of the cooperation protocol between the Ministry of Communications and IT and that of the Education and Scientific Research, which help fund and plan the network.

    This bilateral protocol aims to enhance the proficiency of IT usage at higher educational institutions.

    The cooperation entails the integration between the human resources as well as the technical and financial capacities of the two ministries.

    During the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Nazif reviewed the new network''s applications. He also engaged in an open discussion via videoconferencing with universities presidents and those of research centers in different governorates.

    Meanwhile, Dr Nazif announced the launch of the second generation of internet services for the first time in Egypt.

    The second internet generation is formed of the alliance 206 universities across the globe.

    Dr Nazif also witnessed the launch of Egypt''s first science and technology portal. The new portal offers technological and scientific content for researchers and decision makers through the national information network at the Ministry of Education and Scientific in cooperation with the MCIT.

    The portal includes scans of full texts of Egyptian scientific production supported by a management system managing the sources of electronic info. 

    Minister of State for Administrative Development Dr. Ahmed Darwish, Minister of Investment Dr. Mahmoud Mohie Eddin and Minister of Education Dr. Yosry Al Gamal and Minister of Health and Population Dr. Hatem Al Gabali witnessed the special event.
