Jointly with Arab League: A Workshop on Information Society Indicators’ Assessment Methodology

    Cairo, 20 June 2007

Conducted by the Ministry of Communications and IT in cooperation with the Arab League of Nations, a workshop on the capacity building for Information Society assessment titled “Surveying Infrastructure, Families and Business Sector” has kicked off today.

The two-day workshop attendees includes more than 800 communications specialists, in addition to top statistics officials in Arab countries.

The workshop comes about within the framework of carrying out the recommendations of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the  guidance of the Arab Telecommunications and Information Council of Ministers as well as the Arab Work plan proposed during the summit by the Arab group of the Arab League.

The workshop also highlights technical and methodical techniques for capacity building in collecting CIT data indicators.  It tackles the use of surveys to gather and present data on basic infrastructure indicators.

Topics to be discussed in the workshop include family, individuals’ and business sector data resources as well as the obstacles they encounter; using IT in family and suburbs’ and economy surveys; and the Arab CIT strategy.

During the inaugural session, the importance and necessity of indicators assessment was emphasized, after the follow up of such a novelty and its impacts on other sectors – like education, health, e-business, e-government along with their immense socio-economic upshots on Arab communities – had become essential.

Egypt has adopted the Arab regional project about collecting information – based community indicators.  This is one of five initiatives adopted by the ITU-WTDC 2006.

The workshop is co-organized by four international organizations, namely the United Nations Economic and Social Committee for Western Asia (ESCWA), the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Arab Regional Bureau for the International Telecommunications Union as well as the Organization for Economic cooperation and Development (OECD).

It is worth mentioning that the Arab CIT strategy formulation team - at the Arab League – has recently updated the “Arab Communications and Information Technology Strategy – establishing the Information Society 2007- 2012”.  The team is in the course of setting an executive work plan that includes digital goals as well as strategic measurement indicators.
