    Dr. Kamel Inaugurates New ICT Projects in Aswan

    Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel along with Aswan Governor General Samir Youssef inaugurated today a number of new post and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) projects in the upper Egyptian Aswan Governorate.
    Together with Telecom Egypt (TE) Chairman Eng. Aqil Beshir, Dr. Kamel and General Youssef inaugurated the Aswan/South wireless exchange. The 9515-line capacity exchange center has been equipped with the CDMA wireless technology. The center delivers phone services across Aswan, especially in remote areas.
    A total of 3650 subscribers have been provided with fixed telephony services via the new exchange, while others will be connected shortly.

    All pending requests have been met as exchange centers are open to receive further orders.

    Fifty-two phone exchanges are now available in Aswan, encompassing more than 213,000 phone lines. The number of subscribers in the governorate reached 149,000, while the phone density has come up to 17.6%.

    Fixed phone service installment is underway in the Nile cornice along nine kilometers to serve the ships anchorage, which cost LE two million. LE 334 million have been spent on the Aswan telecom network since October 1999.
    A phone exchange center in Aswan linked to the central one in Luxor had earlier been launched to receive possible malfunction complains.
    In another development, Dr. Kamel and General Youssef accompanied by the Minister's senior advisor for Human Resources and Training commenced an IT Club at the Social Development Society in Daraw city, which is the club number 41 in Aswan. Another two IT clubs are under construction in the governorate.

    During the inaugural ceremony, Minister Kamel awarded the society's director a laptop and the youngest trainee, a ten-year old girl, a PC and a free one-year internet subscription.
    Meanwhile, Dr. Kamel, General Youssef and Egyptian National Post Organization (ENPO) Chairman Eng. Alaa Fahmy commenced the Central Aswan Post Office and the High Dam/West Post Office after being recently upgraded and renovated. Some 157 post offices are now available in Aswan, 37 of which have been automated.  
    Also in Aswan, Dr. Kamel together with General Youssef inaugurated the PC for Every Home Exhibition in the Engineers' Syndicate premises. Thirteen companies participant in the PC for Every Home Initiative showcased their products at the three-day exhibition.

    The Computer and Software Programming Sector at the General Federation of Commerce Chambers is in charge of managing and implementing the initiative.
    Minister Kamel, meanwhile, met with the Aswan public and executive leadership and demonstrated to them the future plans of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
