    Dr. Kamel Presents Egypt's Vision on Boosting Competitiveness through IT at WEF’s Annual Meeting

    Cairo, 25 January 2008

    Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel presented Egypt’s vision on the utilization of ICT to boost competitiveness in developing countries and emerging economies during his speech in the session "Leveraging Technology for Development", held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2008.

    In his speech, Dr. Kamel demonstrated Egypt’s strategy for exporting IT services and human resource development programs.

    The session discussed enhancing human resource training to qualify young calibers and help them acquire new skills to boost competitiveness. The session also tackled the role of IT indicators in propping up socio-economic development in developing countries.
     
    Intel Corporation Board Chairman Mr.  Craig R. Barrett, that of Dell Inc. Mr. Michael Dell, Infosys Technologies Limited CEO and Managing Director Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan and INSEAD Dean of Business School and Technology Mr. Somatra Dotta contributed to the session.
     
    Meanwhile, Minister Kamel gave another speech during a session titled: "What Does Technology Do for Education?"  during which Dr. Kamel presented the experience of the Egyptian Education Initiative (EEI) on using IT in developing the educational system. The session discussed the effect of IT on the delivery of education and the acquisition of necessary skills and explored the potential for experimentation with technology-enabled learning. 

    EEI is a public-private partnership between Egyptian Government and the World Economic Forum's IT members community. The initiative supports Egypt's overall education reform efforts and maximizes the potential for collaborative public private partnerships to achieve its goals.
     
    World Economic Forum (WEF) 2008 annual meeting is held from 23–27 January in Switzerland. WEF is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas. Incorporated as a foundation in 1971, and based in Geneva, Switzerland, the WEF is impartial and not-for-profit organization supervised by the Swiss Federal Government.
