    Intensive Talks between Dr. Kamel and US Officials

    Washington, 24 June 2009
    Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel today continued holding talks with US officials in Washington DC for boosting bilateral cooperation.
     
    Dr. Kamel met Mr. Aneesh Chopra, the White House First Chief Technology Officer. Minister Kamel stated that Mr. Chopra affirmed he had received direct instructions from President Barack Obama about cooperating with Egypt in all issues related to internet and IT; and that Mr. Chopra expressed the US interest in the issue of the internet governance.
     
    Minister Kamel added that Mr. Chopra requested Egypt's participation in the innovation and business leadership summit that President Obama had called for holding before the end of this year. Arab and Muslim countries are expected to take part in the summit.
     
    Minister Kamel noted that he invited Mr. Chopra to participate in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) due to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh resort in November, 2009.
     
    IGF is an opportunity for the US to share with other countries its vision about internet independence and the preparation of an initiative to reach one billion new internet users in developing countries.
     
    Dr. Kamel said that during the meeting he discussed with Mr. Chopra cybersecurity. They agreed on the necessity of setting a program for developing human calibers at the Egyptian emergency center as well as coordinating with the US means of combating cyber crimes.
     
    Moreover, the two parties conferred child and youth protection online as the US had begun to sense the importance of this subject. That's why the two countries share the vision that it is important to have a new framework for cooperation between governments and the civil society in this domain.
     
    Dr. Kamel presented the Egyptian experience of Cyber Peace Initiative led by the First Lady Mrs. Suzan Mubarak.
     
    Minister Kamel pointed out that they conferred the issue of a technology fund to be established for developing countries for investments in small companies, innovation and fellowships. The US is now figuring out economic models for cooperating with Egypt and the Muslim World in the coming phase.
     
    In addition, the issues of innovation, research and development (R&D), nanotechnology were discussed. Amongst the other priorities, Dr. Kamel noted, were an environmentally friendly data center and outsourcing projects with American companies for the benefit of the two countries. It has been agreed to form a high-level work group to follow up the implementation of these issues.
     
    Meanwhile, Dr. Kamel met with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Anna Gomez, and the Acting Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Micheal Copps where they discussed mutual collaboration in human resource training programs in the field of frequency spectrum and the authorization systems of wireless networks.
