Dr. Kamel Witnesses MoU between NTRA and MyCERT

    Cairo, 29 July 2009

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel witnessed today a memorandum of understanding signing between National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and Malaysian Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT).

The MoU aims to set a general framework for bilateral cooperation in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) to fight cyberspace crimes through Egyptian Computer Emergency Readiness Team (EG-CERT) at the NTRA headquarters in the Smart Village.

The MoU goes in line with the process of technological and technical expertise exchange between the two parties in establishing centers to deal with online threats and emergencies. The MoU also entails cooperation and joint projects in the domain of ICT security.

Minister Kamel stated that the agreement lies within the preparation of the required technical calibers to work at CERT.

The CERT staff has received training programs to manage cyberspace security in Egypt and easily detect, prevent and respond to online crimes.

Egypt, Dr. Kamel added, is ready to collaborate with all countries in this area to face and combat any sort of e-crimes through exchanging information, consultation and the best practices.

Minister Kamel noted that the new center in Egypt will be operating as part of an international system in this field.

NTRA Executive President stated that the MoU goes in line with CERT's cooperation with similar bodies in the world to combat any virus attacks, intrusion or manipulation of content on a wide scale by hackers or any organized groups against vital websites or communication networks. Such attacks aim for causing damages, especially to the second generation networks known as IP.

Last year, a technical delegation from Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) paid frequent visits to Malaysia where it took part in a number of activities related to cyberspace security.

During the visits, a number of joint actions were arranged with the Malaysian party. Activities already kicked off by a training program currently held in the Smart Village.
