FLAG Cable Repair Causes Dramatic Progress in Egyptís Internet Service, Tests of SEA-ME-WE Cable Continue

    Cairo, 28 December 2008

The operations room at Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced that the repair ships are expected to finish fixing FLAG cable by Monday.

According to the operations room following up on the repair process of the fiber optic marine cables, the testing process of FLAG will be over within 24 hours. International traffic will be uploaded on cable to further improve the internet service in Egypt.

The operations roomís task force noted that tests performed on SEA-ME-WE 4 indicated irregularity in the international traffic. Hence, internet traffic wasn't redirected to the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable as there were indications of another malfunction.

The new dysfunction has broken out as a result of the previous cut off in one of the cable's components in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Greece, 500 kilometers from Alexandria.

France Telecom is the company in charge of the SEA-ME-WE 4 repair process through one of its ships. The cable owner company has been performing the required additional tests to indentify new malfunction.

International companies are currently going on with repairing SEA-ME-WE 3 cable through an Italian ship. The same repair ship has also been working on the malfunctions erupted last week.
