    Egypt Participates at Connect Arab World Summit in Doha

    Cairo, 4 March 2012

    Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Mohamed Salem, flies tomorrow morning to Doha, in order to participate at Connect Arab World Summit held during the period of 5- 7 March 2012.

    Connect Arab World Summit is organized by the Arab ICT ministries council in partnership with International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

    The summit aims at bringing together all stakeholders to boost the vital role of ICT sector in fighting against poverty and create employment opportunities for the Arab youth.

    The summit objectives also include using new technologies to support economies in the region, and thus, reaching the desired total and sustainable development, and uplifting the standard of living of the Arab citizen in general.

    This summit comes within the context of the World Summit on the Information (WSIS) results and in line with achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty worldwide.

    Moreover, Connect Arab World Summit is the third summit organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) after the summit of Connect Africa at Tunisia and Connect the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) at Geneva. ITU also plans to organize the summits of Connect Americas 2012 and Connect Asia –Pacific 2012.

    During the opening ceremony of the summit, to be held on Tuesday, Dr. Mohamed Salem is to deliver   a speech on behalf of the Chief of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

    Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Arab League Secretary- General, Dr. Nabil ElAraby,  ITU Secretary-General, Dr. Hamadoun I. Touré, and a number of kings, leaders, emirs of Arab countries are to attend the summit.

    During this Summit, Egypt is to present a number of initiatives that represent a cooperation framework at the Arab regional and strengthen the joint cooperation in the ICT field during the coming phase. These initiatives include the arab content for the Arab world, the child internet safety, the memory of the Arab world and the ICT indicators portal.

    Furthermore, the issue of the joint cooperation between Egypt and a number of Arab countries is to be discussed during the summit.  These areas of cooperation shall also encompass plenty of scopes related to ICT such as securing e-space, participating in developing both regulatory and legislative frameworks of communications regulatory policies, besides developing human capacities related to radio spectrum management.

    This goes in line with the Egyptian contribution in establishing units for network security and the infrastructure of e-signature technology.
    Moreover, Egypt intends to transfer its expertise in establishing and managing  technology zones and other relevant fields.
