MCIT Actively Participates in ITU/UNESCO Regional Digital Inclusion Week for Arab States

    Cairo, 27 September 2018

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), represented by the Social Responsibility and Community Services Sector, and the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), through the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC), have participated in the Regional Digital Inclusion Week for Arab States, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Cairo, during September 23-28.

MCIT participation is within the framework of its keenness to strengthen ties and relationships with international organizations and to participate in their events. This year’s event is built on the success of the earlier ITU-UNESCO Regional Information Communication Technology (ICT) Accessibility Week for Arab States, organized in 2017, marking the celebration on 28 September of UNESCO “International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI)”.

During the ITU/UNESCO Regional Digital Inclusion Week for Arab States, Egypt’s ICT sector strategy in social responsibility areas was showcased, aiming to unify the efforts of the government and private sectors and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in social responsibility, contributing to alleviate the suffering of marginalized groups and areas and integrate them in society. The Egyptian experiment has also been reviewed in implementing several projects, including the telemedicine project, and the project of qualifying 20 thousand young people for the labor market, held in youth centers in poor and marginalized areas in a number of governorates. This is in addition to the experience of developing assistive technology to serve PwDs to facilitate the process of education, training, capacity and training for employment.

The Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC) participated in the Digital Inclusion Week through organizing and hosting the "Women Digital Inclusion Day". TIEC reviewed the intensive activities in the field of empowering ICT female entrepreneurs and training them to become able to join the labor market. In addition, TIEC presented the success stories of the 'Heya Raeda' program (she is an entrepreneur), that TIEC have been launching for two consecutive years.

'Heya Raeda' program is aimed at supporting female entrepreneurs in the early phases of establishing startups, whether ICT was as a key factor or a catalyst, such as e-marketing.

The event included a review of various programs and initiatives for the digital empowerment of women through technological solutions, under the auspices of the ITU and UNESCO.
