    Minister of ICT Receives UNESCO Director-General

    Cairo, 12 March 2013

    Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mr. Atef Helmy received at his office in the Smart Village Ms. Irina Bokova Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

    During the meeting Mr. Helmy discussed with Ms. Bokova, currently in a visit to Egypt, the opportunities and fields of bilateral cooperation.

    They also tackled a number of issues related to information and communication technology (ICT) and how to make use of its advanced applications in enriching the knowledge society and innovation in Egypt.

    Other issues discussed during the meeting include: means of spreading general awareness, building the capacities of open source software programs and the joint vision in putting into force the Arabic e-content project and the e-content industry itself.

    This project is one of the important initiatives to document and disseminate the Arab heritage on the web and make it available for all segments and individuals on the level of the Arab World and worldwide.  

    Mr. Helmy tackled a number of successful models of projects launched by Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in cooperation with a number of local partners like Kenana Online as one of the projects carried out through the Egyptian Development Program via the use of ICT.

    Mr. Helmy and Ms. Bokova further conferred bilateral collaboration as to expanding the already established projects, especially those related to the enablement of the citizens with special needs through ICT.

    Other tackled issues included: designing awareness-raising programs for poor areas in collaboration with UNESCO experts to be the first of its kind in the region and repeated in other countries that have similar circumstances.

    It was agreed to pay mutual visits to review the issues related to offering students tablet PCs in order to develop education via IT. Such a bid will help raise the efficiency ICT usage inside the educational system.

    Moreover, the talks tackled expanding the cooperation agreement signed among the ministry, the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) and UNESCO as to the digital documentation of Arab and Islamic heritage of manuscripts in the fields of science and mathematics.

    The project aims at preserving the Arab heritage and making it available in the best possible way using IT.

    In this respect, the two sides talked about the possibility of organizing a workshop that discusses ways of putting into force the Arabic e-content and developing the e-content industry in these fields.
