ICT Minister Witnesses Signing MoU between MCIT and Intertek

    Cairo, 20 October 2018

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has witnessed the ceremony of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and Intertek, to establish an internationally accredited laboratory for electronics testing and certification at the industrial cluster of Sadat Technology Park.

The MoU was signed by the ICT Ministerís Advisor Hossam Othman who is supervising Egypt Makes Electronics (EME) Initiative, and the Director General for Certification of Networks and Electrical Systems at Intertek-North Africa Yasser Al-Mohammadi.

The three-year MoU aims at establishing the first laboratory in Egypt, the Arab region and Africa to test, examine and issue certificates of accreditation for communication equipment and electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, radio frequency devices and GPS tracking devices. The MoU is within the plan to establish a laboratory for testing and issuing certificates of conformity of electronic products with international standards and criteria through partnership with an international leading entity in this field.

The establishment of this laboratory will have a great impact in stimulating the local manufacturing of telecommunications and electronics devices, increasing the competitiveness of local products and increasing its exporting opportunities through issuing internationally accredited quality certificates for locally manufactured products. This is in addition to testing imported products, ensuring its compliance with the standard specifications and preventing the entry of poor products to the local market, thus promoting the competitiveness of Egyptian products, stopping sending the devices to laboratories abroad for testing and certification.

Cooperation in establishing the laboratory is within the framework of implementing the EME initiative, based on designing and manufacturing electronics, as one of the major industries that help the growth of the national economy. This industry is one of the pillars of MCIT strategy aiming to implanting the electronics industry, striving to double Egyptian exports of electronics, thereby helping to increase employment opportunities in designing and manufacturing electronics, and reduce imports of electronic and electrical appliances.

This cooperation contributes to supporting capacity building of Egyptian young people in this area. The agreement to establish the laboratory in the technology park in Sadat City is a result of the efforts exerted to maximize the benefit of technology parks to serve the ICT industry and to provide all facilities and incentives to make it an attractive environment for global investments and an incubator for innovation and development programs.
