    Cooperation between MCIT, MOT to Boost Tourism

    Cairo, 22 April 2013

    Chaired by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mr Atef Helmy and the Minister of Tourism Dr Hisham Zazoua, , the first meeting of the Higher Committee comprised of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the Ministry of Tourism (MOT) took place yesterday to implement the terms of the joint cooperation protocol, signed on February 20 of  last year.

    The meeting was held in MCIT at Smart Village in the presence of the Ministers,  during which they discussed the mechanisms and practical steps for the implementation of the Protocol’s projects which are as follows:
    1-Creating  a live channel broadcast targeting tourism in Egypt, where a live test drive was carried out of the project at Berlin Exhibition through TE Data company.
    2-Assisting MOT technically with promotional activities on the Internet with tour organizers.
    3-Improving the status of sites for the Tourism Promotion Authority on search engines.
    4-Utilization of “mobile application” technology internally and externally.

    The Protocol signed between the two ministries aims at using ICT tools to boost communication between tourists and tourist attractions in Egypt through creating and developing e-portals for MOT on the internet, adding effective and attractive content for tourists and raising the level of services offered to tourists through the provision of information services and communication systems.

    To foster such services, this protocol was concluded to develop the technological infrastructure of MOT and its bodies,  as well as  improving the performance of its employees, through the activation of increase productivity initiative sponsored by MCIT and implemented with the  cooperation of MOT.

    Furthermore, Dr Zaazou and his accompanying delegation along with Mr Helmy toured Smart Village and visited the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) to be informed of the technological means produced by the Center, and its applications in the areas of revitalization and support to the tourism industry in Egypt.

    CULTNAT Director Dr Yasser El Shayeb received the Ministers at the Center, where the officials presented Egypt’s Heritage Panorama  “Cultrama” through which the significant sights of Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic Egypt documenting different eras on the internet were shown.

    Moreover, some projects implemented within the center on the use of mobile applications in the service of the tourism sector were surveyed.

    During the visit, attendees also discussed how to make the most of  CULTNAT products, and utilize it in Egypt’s tourism promotion internally and externally.

    The working group showcased CULTNAT existing projects that can be taken advantage of in stimulating the tourism sector, including for example, Eternal Egypt on the Internet, and the visitor centers house of Hathor and Siwa, and documenting natural reserves in Egypt, and finally EG Heritage project.

    Some of the most important recommendations of the meeting were the formation of a small committee headed by the Vice Chairman of Chambers of Tourism Companies Amr Sedky.

    The committee  is to discuss implementation mechanisms to create short-term action plans that will revive the tourist process, activate IT role in serving tourism sector in general and focus on promoting CULTNAT role through participation in all international tourism fairs.

    The meeting was attended by  the  Vice Chairman of the Chamber of tourism companies Mr Amr Sedky, e-commerce Manager at Egypt Air Mr  Salah Kadri, Chairman of the international tourism sector Mr Ahmed Shoukry, First Deputy to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr Noha Adly, and Regional Manager for Google Egypt Mr Wael Fakharany, who suggested a number of proposals and technological ideas, which will contribute effectively to the implementation of joint projects of the Protocol.

    Among the attendees were also several members of the executive management in both ministers, as well as CULTNAT.
