The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) took part in the meetings of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva with a delegation presided by the advisor of the ICT Minister for Community Services Abeer Shakweer, and the participation of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA).
Through its participation in meetings, MCIT gave a presentation on Egypt’ government achievements in the ICT field in solving problems for the ones with disabilities; as well as discussing the support MCIT is providing in this area for the various sectors, such as education, training and employment.
This comes in line with ITU praising Egypt’s efforts in this field. MCIT organized an exhibition for the winner projects in the previously launched competition by MCIT ‘Tamkeen’ in Mobile applications and software and for people with disabilities (PWDs).
Money Detector and Color Reader is dedicated to PWDs were showcased, as well as the first simulator of accessible supermarket. This is in addition to presenting the e-translator for the ones with hearing disabilities which transforms texts into sign language, and finally the lips reader program for people with hearing disabilities relying on Synthetic intelligence.
The ITU showed interest in presenting Egypt’s position as the best experience in conferences it would take part in, as for example: ITU participation at the conference in Austria last February. The Egyptian delegation was invited to present these applications in a number of conferences in the coming period in a number of states, in addition to the ITU intention to benefit of these applications in the Union premises.
On the sideline of the conference, Shakweer held a meeting with ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) manager. Both officials discussed the ITU participation in the third annual International ICT for PWDs conference Egypt holds during 13- 14 April. The issue of ITU participation in developing Egypt’s communications technologies policies was also raised.
This comes within the framework of MCIT strategy to support and empower people with disabilities relying on education, health, training and qualification. MCIT launched the societal responsibility strategy of the ICT sector in Egypt in December 2013.
