    ICT Minister Meets International Companies Senior Executives during MWC 2019

    Spain, 26 February 2019

    The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has met with LG Electronics Mobile President Morris Lee. They discussed the Egyptian government efforts to foster investments and promote electronics design and industry in Egypt, through deepening local manufacturing.

    In addition, they discussed ways to increase LG investments in Egypt, as part of the company’s plan to contribute to the industry of tablets, to be used in schools. This comes in the framework of developing the school education system using IT, through increasing the local component in the product by not less than 50%.

    The meeting comes as part of Talaat’s participation in the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) in Barcelona.

    The ICT Minister has also met with Flextron Chairman & CEO Jose Maria. They discussed the company’s plan to expand in Egypt through increasing the size of business in software and integrated systems, increasing the number of employees, and studying the plan to expand in electronics industry.

    Talaat has also met with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) President of Hybrid IT and Chief Sales Officer Phil Davis. They discussed cooperation to establish a center for the transfer of digital knowledge in emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain. Discussion included Egypt’s competitive advantages, and the possibility of establishing a technical support center in Egypt to serve HPE customers in the Gulf and Levant region.

    Furthermore, Talaat has met with a delegation from Lenovo Group, headed by its Vice President of Tablet & Smart Device Business Yao Li. They discussed the company’s opportunities for investment in Egypt, in manufacturing tablets and mobile phones, especially with the increasing demand in many fields, including education. Talaat represented the possible opportunities for investment in ICT, especially within the framework of the major national projects implemented in Egypt, and the expansion in building smart cities and infrastructure projects that require a massive supply of electronics, including IoT sensors, servers, control and monitoring devices and systems, desktops, laptops, networking equipment, and tablets.

    In addition, Talaat has met with Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Director General and Board Member Mats Granryd, and the accompanying delegation. They discussed Egypt’s proposal to host Mobile 360 conference that GSMA will organize during 2020-2021. This is an international platform to discuss issues related to the mobile industry worldwide, with the participation of a number of decision makers and senior executives in this industry.

    During the meeting, they discussed the potentials that qualify Egypt to host the conference, and its keenness on promoting the ICT industry. This comes as part of Egypt’s plan of the transition into a digital society, and developing communications and networks infrastructure through upgrading to 5G networks. This is in addition to achieving a breakthrough in digital transformation and e-commerce, especially with Egypt’s competitive advantages. This include having a large network of submarine cables passing through its land, and highly qualified calibers to help major ICT companies export their services to clients around the world, using different languages, to cover the companies’ needs in the local and the global market.

    The meeting was attended by a number of executive officials from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), and Telecom Egypt (TE).
