During MWC, ICT Minister Witnesses Signing Two MoUs between Nokia, ITIDA, ITI

    Spain, 28 February 2019

During his participation in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has witnessed the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between Nokia and both the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and the Information Technology Institute (ITI). The aim is to cooperate to provide distinct job opportunities, build capacities, and develop Egyptian youth skills to support the digital transformation efforts in Egypt.

Talaat stated that the Egyptian government is keen on achieving its strategic vision of putting Egypt on the world's leading IT and value-added services sites map. He added that cooperation with Nokia will help provide various opportunities for young Egyptian calibers, and build calibers capable of using and adapting emerging technologies.

He added that the Ministry of communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in the framework of the partnerships and cooperation with major global technology companies, is putting more effort in fostering Egyptian talents and competing on global level.

The MoU between Nokia and ITIDA includes organizing an annual joint competition for innovation “Hackathon”, in cooperation with Nokia Bell Labs. Nokia will provide training scholarships for the winners to get direct experience in working in its labs.

The MoU also includes organizing joint activities to promote research efforts, innovation programs, and capacity building in communications, 5G, Internet of Thing (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and network security. The two parties agreed on sharing the best practices in skills development, capacity building, innovation, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) development.

As per the MoU between Nokia and ITI, cooperation shall be established to develop training programs for university students and graduates, by providing practical learning opportunities with employees and professionals for three months. This targets university graduates in Delta, Upper Egypt, Suez Canal and Cairo.

The MoU also includes cooperation to organize a one-month training camp for the above-mentioned students. This is in addition to organizing orientation sessions and field visits to Nokia premises, where participating students will benefit from hands-on training and contact with experts working at Nokia.

Moreover, the MoU stipulates that the two parties shall cooperate to develop an online content for high-demand jobs where online training will be available, as well as to organize workshops and interactive sessions for Egyptian youth.

Nokia Middle East and Africa Head Amr El-Leithy said that they are honored to work with MCIT to provide new and distinct technological capabilities for university students and ICT workers in Egypt. He added that the two MoUs will enable Egypt to leave its mark in ICT globally, and will contribute to the development of the digital ecosystem in Egypt.

He added that the interaction with Nokia’s specialists will give the Egyptian calibers the opportunity to use modern technology and enhance their innovation, thus contributing to the growth of these technologies in Egypt.
