ICT Minister Witnesses ‘Health Mobile Technology’ Initiative, ‘mHealth’ Program First Phase Launching

    Cairo, 29 November 2015

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser ElKady witnessed, today, the ceremonies of launching “Health Mobile Technology” initiative, and implementing the first phase of the national program "mHealth" to fight diabetes through ICT means.

The initiative aims to use ICTs through mobile phone technology to communicate with patients, who are vulnerable to diseases, by sending them free text messages. It also aims to use mobile phone applications to raise citizens’ health awareness to deal with chronic and endemic diseases.

This initiative is in the framework of partnership and cooperation between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the Ministry of Health and Population (MHP) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the three local mobile companies and ICT companies.

ElKady has stated that the launch of this initiative is part of the State's keenness on preserving citizen’s health through using all available means to continuously raise awareness. This is in addition to communicating with patients via mobile phone applications to provide necessary information on those diseases, and how to deal with them to avoid risks and complications.

ElKaddy has also added that the initiative is scheduled to include six awareness campaigns, starting with diabetes.  In the new phase, awareness will include hepatitis, tumors, high blood pressure, heart diseases and chronic respiratory diseases.

Communication will be conducted with registered and non-registered patients enrolled in MHP databases for the dissemination of health awareness among all segments of society, out of "prevention is better than cure" principle. Each campaign will be followed by applying scientific research mechanisms to measure the impact and success of the campaign.

During the meeting, the ICT Minister announced that MCIT launched the initiative of communicating with parents to remind them of dates and places of vaccinations for their children, via mobile messages and IT applications for free.

The mobile health care initiative is an innovative means to utilize technological applications and communications services, thereby providing health care for patients and continuously communicate with them.

It is a free service provided directly to citizens. The initiative also aims to use analytical data in drawing disease maps in Egypt and conducting strategic planning to address such diseases.
