ICT Minister Witnesses Launching 1st French-Egyptian Competition for Startups in Egypt

    Cairo, 6 November 2019

The Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Tarek Amer, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat and the French Ambassador to Egypt Stefan Roumtier witnessed, today, the official launching of the first of its kind competition for startups in Egypt, in Smart Village, in the presence of over 300 participants.

Launching the competition reflects the two countriesí common desire to enhance bilateral cooperation in innovation and entrepreneurship. It follows the Letter of Internet (LoI) signed during the French Presidentís visit to Egypt in January to support self-employment and the growth of startups specializing in digital services.

The competition aims to boost the development of Egyptian startups that have the potential to grow in sectors of common priority, namely health, fintech and sustainable cities, and supporting them to become leading companies in digital transformation.

The competition would not have come to light if it was not for the help of 15 French companies including AXA, Credit Agricole, Orange, Schneider Electric, Danone, Sanofi, and Valeo, that have vast experience in the aforementioned sectors.

Registration for the competition is open until January 15, through the e-portal http://startup.franceinegypt.com/.

The competition first phase involves selecting startups and enrolling them in an intensive training program, jointly organized by a number of partners specializing in driving innovation, including the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC), Falak, Flat6Labs, and EFG EV Fintech.

During the second phase, a major event will be organized in spring to select and announce the seven winners of the competition. The event will be attended by French and Egyptian public figures, representatives of the corporate economic environment, as well as investors.

The winning startups will share an EGP 750K award, in addition to support packages provided by the competition sponsors and partners.
