    ICT Minister Delivers Speech at Africa 2019 Conference

    The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has delivered a speech during Africa 2019 Conference.

    The two-day conference was organized by the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation (MIIC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in the New Administrative Capital, under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The aim is to stimulate investment in Africa.

    Talaat highlighted Egyptís keenness on enhancing cooperation with African countries, in light of its chairmanship of the African Union (AU), to achieve digital transformation in Africa. He also presented the Egyptian vision to achieve this objective, focusing on developing a comprehensive digital infrastructure using ICT, through which communication, Internet and digital services can be provided to all African citizens.

    The vision also focuses on building African peopleís capacities, and developing applications and innovative solutions based on modern technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analysis.

    On the sidelines of the conference, the ICT Minister stated in a press statement that the global digital economy is estimated at $11.5 trillion, equivalent to 15.5% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with expectations to reach 25% in the next 10 years.

    In addition, Talaat said that digital transformation creates unprecedented opportunities for achieving economic and social development in Africa. He referred to the Egyptian cooperation with African countries to bridge the digital divide and provide access to information through developing the digital infrastructure and connecting with submarine cables.

    The ICT Minister also referred to the African cooperation initiative through which Egypt aims to establish strategic partnership with sister African countries to promote digital transformation. The aim is to provide e-services to citizens, fight corruption and achieve social justice.

    Talaat presented the programs and initiatives that Egypt is carrying out with African countries to build youthís capacities in ICTs, and promote innovation and creativity.

    On the sidelines of the conference, the ICT Minister met with the President of Mastercard Middle East and Africa Raghu Malhotra. They discussed cooperation in financial inclusion projects by providing microcredit digitally through mobile phones.

    Talaat also met with the World Bank Country Director for Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti Marina Wes, where they discussed joint cooperation, especially in the strategy of deploying high-speed Internet.
