ICT Minister, Ireland Ambassador Discuss ICT Cooperation

    Cairo, 17 August 2016

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser ElKady has received Ireland's Ambassador to Egypt Damian Cole where they discussed means of cooperation in the ICT areas, opportunities of partnerships in the areas of outsourcing and Egyptian exports of IT services. This will be achieved through benefiting from Egypt's geographical location as a key gateway to the markets of Africa and the Middle East.

ELKady also reviewed priorities of action in the ICT sector, such as establishing new technology parks in a number of different governorates of Egypt, establishing a powerful industry in electronics designing and manufacturing and building a base of potential and creative calibers in a number of advanced technological disciplines. This in addition to the fourth generation (4G) services that will be offered soon in the Egyptian market.

During the meeting, ElKady referred to the development that has been made in establishing two technology parks in Borg Al Arab and New Assiut, to be completed by the end of this year. He stated that the new technology parks enjoyed privileged locations, being set up near universities to take advantage of the unique environment of creativity and dissemination of science and knowledge that the country will provide in those parks.

For his part, Cole hailed efforts exerted in the ICT sector in Egypt, and expressed his admiration of the Smart Village and the facilities provided to the local and international companies to create an investment environment. He also lauded the number of international companies operating in Smart Village.

The Irish Ambassador toured the Smart Village and visited the headquarters of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). ITIDA CEO Asmaa Hosni shed light on the competitive advantages of Egypt in the ICT field, and incentives provided by ITIDA to encourage foreign investors and Irish companies to invest in Egypt. She also reviewed ITIDA efforts regarding the consideration paid to technological innovation and entrepreneurship, protection of intellectual property rights and permanent coordination among concerned authorities to facilitate the flow of foreign investments, ensuring their protection and ease of doing business.
