    Egyptian Government Cooperates with IBM to Show Cultural Heritage on the Web

    Cairo, 20 May 2001
    A cooperation agreement was signed today between the Egyptian Government and IBM Corporation to implement a two year project for developing new digital imaging and web portal technologies for cultural documentation.

    The signing ceremony was witnessed by H.E. Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Ahmed Nazif.

    The Agreement comes within the cooperation scheme developed between Egypt and the United States in the field of information technology. The LE10m project will result in the development of a web portal available in Arabic, English and French, that will focus on the creation of two and three dimensional representations of Egyptian archeological artifacts as represented by the possessions of museums and as found in various archeological sites.

    The project will make use of the pioneering work on digital imaging technologies developed in IBM’s New York-based Research Laboratories.

    IBM’s contribution will cover the cost of the requisite equipment, R&D, training and expertise. T

    he Internet site will be developed by a team of international and Egyptian experts and its cultural content will be created and owned by Egypt.

    The site will be based, maintained and continuously updated by Egypt. The National Center for Documentation of Natural and Cultural Heritage, affiliated to MCIT, and the Ministry of Culture’s Supreme Council of Antiquities will cooperate with IBM in executing the project and fulfilling its objectives.

    The agreement was signed by Dr. Gaballah Aly Gaballah, Secretary General, of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Dr. Fathy Saleh, Director of the National Center for Documentation of Natural and Cultural Heritage.
