    Minister Nazif Discusses Latest Developments of the MEMS Facility

    Cairo, 11 April 2001

    Minister Nazif Discusses Latest Developments of the MEMS Facility H.E. Dr. Ahmed Nazif Minister of Communications and Information Technology met today with Mr. Jean Michel Karam, President and CEO of MEMScAP, a world leader in the design and manufacturing of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), for the follow-up discussions concerning the creation in 6th October City of an assembly and test facility in addition to a design center for MEMS components* The new facility will be the first of its kind in the Middle East, with investment totaling $100m over five years. The project is expected to result in the creation of 2000 new jobs for engineers and technical personnel. A plot of 40,000sqm has been allocated for the new project and the provision of utilities and infrastructural services is currently underway. MEMScAP- Egypt is being established under Egypts Investment in the Free-Zones Law and will expectedly be operational within a year. The two partners will cooperate closely in the recruitment of required personnel and in conducting the necessary training. By exporting from Egypt, were saving 33% in manufacturing and 25% in design and development, while also having access to highly qualified engineers, says MEMScAP-Egypt President, Dr. Hisham Haddara. A major portion of the projects output will be directed to export markets, which will enhance the export and economical indicator of Egypt. This project is considered the start of the high-tech industry in the area of electronics serving the optical and communication systems.
