World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2023
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2023 is celebrated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), on May 17, under the theme "Empowering the least developed countries (LDCs) through ICTs." The purpose of WTISD is to help raise awareness of the challenges and successes of LDCs on social media. On WTIDS, ITU calls on the public and private sectors to make pledges for universal connectivity and digital transformation in LDCs through its Partner2Connect Digital Coalition. WTISD has been celebrated annually every 17 May since 1969 to mark the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the founding of ITU in 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in 1073.
