Mobile World Congress 2015

Egypt participated in the Mobile World Congress (GSMA) 2015—organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for GSM operators—that was held during 2-5 March in Barcelona.

Former Minister of Communications and Information Technology Atef Helmy held a number of meetings with international companies’ officials to discuss means of endorsing international investment in the local market, as well as Arab and western government officials to exchange views.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA)  and GSMA—concerned with the interests of mobile operators worldwide-to promote cooperation between both parties in mobile phones development and their infrastructure.

Helmy met with the Chief Executive Officer of MasterCard Ajay Banga where they discussed procedures to provide citizens with integrated financial services using mobile phones to enable them from safely using financial services through technology solutions.

Moreover, Helmy met with Saudi Governor of Communication and Information Technology Commission Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Darrabmeans to promote cooperation between the two countries in the ICT field.

Another meeting was held with the CEO of Cisco Systems John Chambers and discussed the company’s investment in ICT projects that will be presented during Egypt Economic Development Conference.

On the sideline of GSMA, He met with Fadi Shehadi the CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)-responsible for managing and coordinating the Domain Name System (DNS)-where they discussed means of promoting partnership between the two parties to develop and provide necessary experience for the internet community in Egypt.

Mobile World Congress is the largest global platform that gathers international ICT companies in the field of mobile phones and related industries and government officials to recognize—through discussions—latest technologies of this industry and confer means of development and investment opportunities, thereby shaping mobile phones industry trends in the coming years.
