Egypt Partakes in 27th Universal Postal Congress

Egypt, represented by Egypt Post, participated in the 27th Universal Postal Congress- the supreme authority of the Universal Postal Union (UPU)- held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on August 9-28, under the theme “Digitizing postal services and developing e-commerce.” The Congress addresses key topics related to the future of postal work and the challenges it faces around the world.

During the Congress, Egypt will be nominated for the membership of the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC) for 2021-2025 session. In addition, member countries will elect the next UPU Director General and Deputy Director General for the 2021–2025 session. A number of decisions are expected to be taken, concerning proposed amendments to the Acts of the Union, the integrated product plan, the reform of the new contribution system in UPU budget, and the mechanism for financing UPU personnel pension fund. This is in addition to deciding on the African stance on making UPU available to key players.

The Congress shed light on the role of the Post as a true partner in financial inclusion and regional integration. Egypt Post’s achievements in digital transformation, e-commerce and financial inclusion were also presented, in addition to the Egyptian experience in financial inclusion and how African countries can benefit from such experience and replicate it.

On the sidelines of the event, Egypt Post held a number of intensive bilateral meetings with the Ivorian Prime Minister, the Ivorian Minister of Digital Economy and Post, the Palestinian Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, the Arab delegations participating in the Congress, the candidates for the positions of UPU Director General and Deputy Director General, and the representatives of the Post organizations participating in the Congress. The meetings aimed to reach an agreement on making amendments to the current systems to serve the interests of Egypt, developing and least developed countries.

These meetings provide an opportunity for discussing issues related to Egypt Post and UPU Member Countries. The meetings also contribute to strengthening cooperation and exchanging experiences between Post organizations in areas including postal services, digital transformation and financial inclusion. This is achieved through developing a mechanism for joint action between Post organizations around the world.
