An Egyptian team is participating in the 34th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2022), held in Indonesia, on August 7-15. The members of the Egyptian team have been selected through the final qualifying rounds, co-organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) for selecting the members of the team.
Two qualifying rounds have been organized. The first was held online on April 22-23 for those who participated in the previous versions of the Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics (EOI), who meet the age requirement to join this year’s competition. Around 200 students applied to participate in this qualifier.
The second round was organized at AASTMT premises on April 29-30. It included 20 students who stood out from the rest of the contestants in the first round. During the second one, the top four students were selected, forming the Egyptian team that is participating in the IOI 2022. They were trained through bootcamps and prepared and qualified to compete in the international competition.
IOI is the flagship programming and algorithm event targeting school students. Every year, MCIT prepares the Egyptian team participating in the IOI, as part of a cooperation protocol signed with AASTMT for carrying out training activities within the framework of national, regional, and international events in informatics.
Throughout the years, the Egyptian team managed to bag numerous medals in previous versions of IOI, taking Egypt’s tally to 25 medals: 19 bronze and six silver. Egypt is scheduled to host IOI, for the second time, in 2024; the first was in 2008.
