Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), is participating in the meeting of Study Group 5 (Electromagnetic fields (EMF), environment, climate action, sustainable digitalization, and circular economy), organized by the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) at ITU headquarters in Geneva, on June 21- July 1.
MCIT representative is the Vice-chairman of SG5 for the study period 2022-2024, Co-rapporteur of Question 7/5 on e-waste, circular economy, and sustainable supply chain management, vice chair of the Arab Regional group of SG5 and member of the African Regional group.
The meeting agenda covers several topics, including discussing the Revised Resolution 72 on “Measurement and assessment concerns related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields,” Revised Resolution 73 on “Information and communication technologies, environment, climate change and circular economy,” and Revised Resolution 79 on “the role of telecommunications/information and communication technologies in handling and controlling e-waste from telecommunication and information technology equipment and methods of treating it,” among others.
SG5 is responsible for studies on methodologies for evaluating ICT effects on climate change and publishing guidelines for using ICTs in an eco-friendly way. Under its environmental mandate, SG5 is also responsible for studying design methodologies to reduce ICTs and e-waste's adverse environmental effects, for example, through recycling of ICT facilities and equipment.
The ITU was established in 1865. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), responsible for all matters related to ICTs, and is one of the oldest international organizations in operation.
