EUI, AWS Team up to Organize ‘Climathon’
Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) is organizing the Climate Change Hackathon (Climathon) on August 28- September 29. Climathon is powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT).
Climathon targets undergraduate students at different universities and higher education institutes across Egypt and Arab and African countries to come up with innovative ideas and develop solutions through the effective use of technology to support the global action on climate change and address challenges to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Hackathon is organized as part of the preparations to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, in November. Partners in Climathon include Egypt Post, Intel, and the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA).
The main themes of Climathon include Sustainable Cities, Clean Energy, Empowering Communities, and Water Stewardship. Winners receive cash prizes of up to $5000, awards by AWS, including AWS platform credits, access to AWS Academy Learner Labs, advanced technology workshops, and mentorship opportunities; and recognition awards, including certificates and trophies.
The event agenda includes an Awareness and Learning Week, featuring webinars by senior experts; a Technical Enablement Week, and advanced technology workshops and activities. In conjunction with Climathon, EUI is holding a competition for Egyptian startups in climate change and sustainable development.
EUI is a not-for-profit university established by MCIT and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research at the Knowledge City in the New Administrative Capital. The University’s vision is to provide world-class education and scientific research and become a hub for highly-skilled professionals in ICT and related fields, helping position Egypt as a leading tech hub in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
The deadline for idea submission and team registration is September 8. For more information and registration, kindly click
