Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics Annual Contest Kicks off


The Egyptian Olympiads in Informatics activities will conclude its activities in an annual ceremony held in the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Alexandria on Thursday, 20th of August, 2009.

The event will be held under the auspices of Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Communications and Information Technology and Dr. Youssry El Gamal, Minister of Education.

The EOI annual contest for the year 2009 is took place on Saturday, August 15th at Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technology Applications, 6th of October City.

With the participation of 100 contestants from Egypt, the contest promotes IT usage in problem solving techniques among youth, encouraging young talents in IT, and bridging the gaps between the youth and experts in the IT field.

Egypt won three bronze medals in the 21st International Olympiads in Informatics held in Bulgaria. Winners are Ahmed Salem, Amr Ali Azzazi, and Emad William.

Egypt is the Middle Eastern country that won medals only in the largest international competition for programming and information systems.
Dr. Kamel said that the ministry is keen on supporting and encouraging youth and children through teaching them the techniques and methodological approaches to ICT problems.

Contestants are required to solve a series of questions and problems using methodical thinking and basic computer algorithms to devise a suitable program. Problem solving techniques include problem definition and analysis, strategy selection and implementation, and finally solution validation.

The competition is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Communications in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Arab Academy for Science and Technology.
