"PCs for Community" Initiative Agreement Signing

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel witnessed today the signing of the cooperation protocol agreement between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the banks funding the "PCs for Community" Initiative.

The singed protocol comes about within the Egyptian Information Society Initiative (EISI). EISI aims at founding and developing an ambitious information society as well as supporting the Egyptian CIT industry.

This agreement also goes in line with "Egypt PC 2010 – Nation Online". This program is one of top priorities of the Egyptian National Communications and Information Technology Plan as it enables citizens - especially the limited-income brackets - to own PCs at flexible payment methods.

The program is an upgraded pattern that has been rebuilt to catch up with the benefits of initiatives like the "PC for Every Home" and  “Computer for Every Student and Teacher".

On its part, MCIT has conducted specialized market research studies by major world research companies. Through these studies, the computer business society has been rehabilitated in the fields of distribution, industry and after-sales-services in return for binding financial guarantees.

The MCIT has also set up an awareness raising program that targets an increase in computer ownership among the Egyptian families from 25% to 30% by 2010.

The protocol parties, represented in Telecom Egypt, Misr Banque, National Bank of Egypt with MCIT, have agreed on facilitating the financing and technical support required to granting citizens the PCs. Citizens will obtain these PCs through facilitated credit loans with swift procedures as well as the electronic payment methods available.

Banks participating in the initiative will offer loans to the clients of the major companies accredited by the MCIT to distribute PCs. Clients will get these loans, whether they are meeting the requirements of the fund through their phone lines or through income statements issued by the companies they work for.

General Anwar Helmy first deputy CIT minister, Eng. Aqil Beshir Telecom Egypt CEO and managing director, Mr. Mohamed Barakat board chairman of Misr Banque and Mr. Hussien Abdel-Aziz board chairman of NBE singed the agreement.
