ICT Minister Intensive Activity in Gitex Dubai 2013


The events of the four-day Gitex Dubai 2013, where Egypt took part with a high- level delegation, witnessed an intensive activity for the Minister of Communications and Information Technology and the accompanied delegation.

The ICT Minister witnessed the release of “ Pluto”, a new tablet that is co-produced by the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) and Intel Egypt. Edu Tablet 10.1 will be produced by AOI  and put in the market soon in two different sizes: 7 and 10 inches.

Helmy held a number of bilateral meetings with ICT  multinationals leaders like HP, Oracle, IBM, Google, Ericsson, Vodafone, Microsoft, IMC, Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, BG for innovative solutions and sales, as well as the Arab communications institutions, such as Etisalat, Du and STC.

The meetings raised a  number of issues, including mechanisms set by the Egyptian government to attract more investments in the Egyptian market, thus providing  job opportunities in the sector and benefiting of the high-qualified young calibers.

While visiting Gitex exhibition, Helmy witnessed the signing of a partnership agreement between Vodafone Egypt and the Emirati Seed group. The agreement aims to open new markets for the Egyptian start-ups sponsored by Vodafone through its Xone project supporting entrepreneurship.

Another meeting was held between the ICT Minister and the Chairman of the UAE Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, raising issues of common interest, among which are issues the smart government initiative, Sheikh Mohamed Ben Rached e-learning initiative and the communication and information technology support fund.

Discussions also tackled means to enrich the Arabic content on internet in an attempt to preserve the Arab identity and spread Arab culture and heritage. They also included the establishment of the high-level domain (.Arab) that contributes to spreading internet among Arab-language speakers and those dealing with Latin letters.

Moreover, Helmy met with leaders of Etisalat Emirates, in the presence of Etisalat Egypt president, Gamal El Sadat to get acquainted with the latest smart government applications offered by the company in cooperation with the government.

The ICT Minister also participated at GSMA for mobile technology in the Middle East where he met GSMA Director General, Anne Bouverot and discussed the broadband strategy in society development. They also talked about the role of broadband in developing community and the fact that it has spread in Egypt by 10% leading to 1.4% increase in GDP.

During the meeting between the ICT Minister and Ericsson regional head in the Middle East, the company’s vision towards “the networking society” and its possible impact on Egypt was showcased. Helmy stressed on the importance of pumping more Ericsson investments in Egypt, thus providing more distinguished job opportunities for youth.

Throughout the ICT minister’s meeting with Google regional head, Mohamed Mourad, they agreed to develop a e-marketing project within the tourism sector and to qualify Egyptian youth in distinguished domains.
