ICT Minister Meets Sweden Ambassador to Egypt

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has met with Sweden’s Ambassador to Egypt Jan Thesleff, and Ericsson Egypt- Country Manager Sameh Shoukry, in the presence of  the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Acting CEO Maha Rashad and the Director of International Relations Division at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Mohamed El Gawsaky.

During the meeting, Talaat reviewed the projects and initiatives implemented by MCIT to achieve the transition to digital society, in cooperation with all the State’s sectors, support creativity and entrepreneurship, build youth capacities, empower and integrate People with Disabilities (PwDs) and develop remote and poor areas using ICTs. He underlined the significance of developing infrastructure and enhancing the efficiency of communication networks to improve the quality of services provided to citizens and accelerate the digital transformation processes, thus contributing to achieving economic and social development.

For his part, Thesleff welcomed the strengthening of cooperation between Egypt and Sweden in the ICT field, especially in the areas of smart cities, electronics manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Shoukry reviewed Ericsson’s activities in providing the latest technologies in the field of improving the efficiency of the telecommunication networks, supporting research and development and promoting future plans. He also discussed the possibility of establishing a headquarters for Ericsson Garage in Smart Village or the City of Knowledge, due to be established in the new Administrative Capital. Ericsson Garage is a specialized platform for open innovation designed to build partnerships with academia and customers to support startups in developing products and ensuring that the final version of the product meets the actual needs of customers.

The meeting discussed the possibility of cooperation in a number of related areas, most notably the contribution to the Presidential Initiative “Africa Games and Digital Applications”, through studying the possibility of establishing an Egyptian-Swedish center for the development of electronic games and exchanging visits between companies specialized in this field in both countries. The meeting also discussed means to enhance cooperation in empowering People with Disabilities (PwDs) using assistive technology, and promote partnership in empowering women entrepreneurs and provide training programs that will enable them to start their own businesses and increase their incomes.
