ICT Minister, French Minister of State for Digital Sector Talk Cooperation in AI, Digital Transformation

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has met with the French Minister of State for the Digital Sector Cedric O, in the presence of Egypt's Ambassador to France Ehab Badawy.

They discussed enhancing cooperation in digital economy, digital transformation, promoting technological innovation and entrepreneurship, and growth of startups specializing in IT.

This comes in the framework of the declaration inked between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Egypt, last January.

Moreover, the two sides announced launching a joint competition to promote innovation among startups, encourage them to create smart solutions in health, fintech and sustainable cities, and incubate the finest solutions provided by Egyptian startups.

Registration for the competition is set to start in mid-October. The competition is organized in collaboration between a number of companies interested in promoting fintech and fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and French companies that intend to provide fund, technical support and guidance.

Relevantly, Talaat invited the French Minister to attend the competition award ceremony, which will be held next March.

During the meeting, the ICT Minister presented MCIT strategy and its main pillars, including youth capacity building, promoting technological innovation and entrepreneurship, developing the ICT infrastructure, creating an enabling environment for attracting investments, and achieving digital transformation.

Talaat added that a number of digital transformation projects are currently underway in Port Said governorate, including launching e-government services, with the aim to transform it into a smart city, to be applied in other governorates later.

Furthermore, the two sides discussed exchanging expertise in digital transformation and enhancing its mechanisms through capacity building, empowering companies to achieve digital transformation, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and facilitating the incubation of Egyptian startups in incubators and workspaces in France.

The two sides also presented the potential avenues of cooperation between the two countries in AI, as the pillars of the Egyptian strategy for AI were discussed. This is addition to discussing carrying out joint projects including organizing an Egyptian-French forum on AI, and launching initiatives to enhance cooperation between AI companies and educational institutions in the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, Talaat invited the French Minister to participate in the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19), hosted in Egypt in October, in Sharm El Sheikh.

The meeting was attended by the Associate Minister for Networks and ICT Infrastructure Hossam El-Gamal, the Deputy Minister for Human and Institutional Capacity Development and CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Hala El Gohary, the ICT Minister’s Advisor for AI Golestan Radwan, and a number of MCIT officials.
