The Minister of Justice Omar Marwan and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat witnessed, today, the opening of the first phase of the remote Pre-Trial Detention (PTD) renewal system project, between New Cairo Courthouse and Tora Prison, 15 May and Nahda Central Prisons.
The system operates through considering the accused PTD renewal hearings, using modern technology, where the judge calls the accused in their jail cells through certain halls in each prison, in the presence of their attorneys. Calls are conducted through closed secured television networks, extended between a number of courthouses and prisons.
The new system is to be introduced in all courthouses and prisons.
The opening ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT).
After introducing the new system successfully, Marwan thanked both the Ministry of Interior and MCIT for their productive efforts and cooperation in the judicial technological development. He underlined the significance of applying the project soon in all courthouses, without breaching the safeguards of the accused, stipulated in the Constitution and the Law.
Marwan highlighted the importance of this project in terms of the speedy completion and security. It also helps in reducing the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) among prisoners and citizens. He stated that he trusts the attorneys will cooperate with the Ministry of Justice to employ technology in legal procedures and utilize modern technology in managing the justice system, for the governance, speed and convenience it provides to everyone involved in the litigation process.
For his part, Talaat stated that there is productive cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and MCIT to implement the project of digitizing the law enforcement system nationwide, with the aim to achieve effective digital justice. The law enforcement system seeks to provide a digital system that helps achieve integration between all the parties responsible for achieving justice, through using ICT, he added.
The project reflects the state sectors’ concerted efforts for building Digital Egypt to provide excellent services to citizens, said the ICT Minister, thanking the Ministries of Interior and Justice for the efforts made within the framework of the joint action, in accordance with the schedule set to make a success of the system.
The attendees concluded the meeting with inspecting the construction work at the Fifth Settlement documentation office in New Cairo Courthouse, and the renovations carried out at the Courthouse, providing a decent work environment for judges and litigants.
